It does raise this issue of karaoke and competition. Can an artistic hobby really be competitive? In recent months I've abandoned the notion of entertaining. I just sing what I want (within limits -ie- I realize now what an intrusion on others El Paso would be). But tonight I intend to do Old Man River again - just 'cause I like it and it's one of the few bass songs on the lists. Relevance? If I did this song in a comp I wouldn't even bother hanging around for the outcome as I know it's not the sort of genre that wins prizes. Who cares? Does that make me a lesser karaoke participant if I provide some variety to the night? All I care is not to get insulted and pigeon-holed because of my choices. That's how I got onto the rap kick - it started as a 'take the p*** out of Tom' gag but I took it as a challenge. Rap has now become fun for me in small doses now & then, especially as hardly anyone else does it at my local.
So, where was I 'when deep purple, slade, kiss, billy thorpe, rose tattoo and acdc were doing gigs'? I was doing much the same, with Vox amps that could knock down a sparrow at 50 yards and draw cops from across town. But I don't need to keep singing those songs decades later.
