Friday 29 Feb 2008 : The Last Night at THE BUSH INN

A favourite haunt over the years for many singers ... from the good old days of KJ Jodie to KJ Adam to KJ Aidy and with KJ Aaron for the last night.

Big spacious venue, but badly set up – with a big island bar (somewhere off centre, in the last 3rd of the venue towards the front windows) which took up precious space, a pool table to one side near the entrance, limited seating arrangements with tables – in short, not as inviting nor as comfortable as a venue can be to entice patrons to stay 4 - 5 hours.

Last night jitters got the better of KJ Aaron early in the night, running around like a headless chook trying to set things up (advertised starting time 8.30pm, but at 8.45pm, he’s still setting up) – and dealing with cables that didn’t work, crackly speakers, etc.

Shortly past 9.00pm he got the gig going. Around 20 people were there when the gig got started, mostly diners, half a dozen singers in all. To stretch it, for the first rotation, singers got on with gaps of loud filler-music in between singers (by the way, I hate filler music, it does not provide for a smooth flowing night of karaoke, and particularly so during nights when there are many singers).

But by 9.30pm the place was packing out – everyone who’s been a Bush Inn fan seem to be there – and you can tell, they all went straight to queue up (yes, they did that!) to write their songs down, all from memory, with song titles and 4 digit reference numbers etched in their memories!

It’s one of those nights you’d expect good singers, as they all will be doing their best 2 karaoke songs – and yes, I was proved right. I left at around 10.15pm, as it turned into a typical Bush Inn electrifying party-night, not that it’s not my scene, I just wanted to make it to The Alma Sportsclub before it closes for the night (for a follow-up review, one year on ...)

Thank you to The Bush Inn for many a great karaoke nights. You will be missed by many.
