When to introduce new singers:

A comment against a SA venue in the gig comments makes mention of a singer making the complaint that the host gets new singers up 'too quickly' (my emphasis). My question is, what is desireable? What is too quick? What is too slow? Of course, there will be different answers from the singer than from the host.

IMHO it will always depend on the current state of your rotation and new singers should always be slotted in first come first served (relative to other new singers). I wrote a karaoke-crawl article last year where I deemed a 1hr wait for the first song to be unacceptable from the singer's POV. In my experience, 30 min is probably a good time frame to aim at, not only from a host POV (where you want to balance wait times for both new and existing singers) but also from the singer's POV. I don't think it's all that healthy to be called up to sing as soon as you put in a slip, the last thing you want is people subconsciously trained to not expect a wait!

The other thing you want to be aware of obviously is the way your audience is investing in the venue. Ideally, you'd like to see new people come in, buy a drink, look over a book, put in a song and then still have time to pick up another drink. Situations will of course vary depending on the venue and the type of people that venue attracts but getting people up as soon as they walk through the door doesn't exactly give them enough time to even get to the bar! Let's not provide obstacles in spending money! lol
