| From the Where2sing.com forum: The Whatever post raised the issue of confusion of people's motives to attend karaoke. It assumes that a great many punters aspire to become hosts. I would have thought that punters aspire more often to be singers, which would be a very different trade. Indeed, many punters might want to have nothing to do with the professional music industry. Read the life stories of music superstars - motel rooms, buses, rip-off agents. And those are the rich ones! For starters, it's a night shift job. Not everyone has a big voice that can last through an hour or more of performance. I could say the same for my other hobby - astronomy. Would I really want to freeze my ass off on the night shift atop some obscure mountain in Chile & apply for endless grants to roll over my career every 6 months at the whim of a committee? - thank goodness I only had the aptitude to be an amateur. Professionals don't even get to look at the stars. Same with music. Do we envy Garry & Di who we see packing gear late at night to drive many miles home on the F3? They give us the luxury of singing if & when we want and I can even have a peek at the stars when I get home, if so inclined. As long as hosts let us sing and don't deafen or humiliate us I have no reason than to other than praise them and be thankful for their work.
