Hudson's WiiWare strategy begins with Karaoke
Karaoke Joysound to make its debut on Nintendo's WiiWare service, and Hudson's strategy for WiiWare is detailed.

March 29, 2008 - A press conference in Tokyo has unveiled some new games for the WiiWare service today, including Alien Crush and Blue Oasis. The most detailed game was Karaoke Joysound Wii, which is being developed by Hudson, who were responsible for the Mario Party games.

The title is set to feature a large amount of downloadable content, with Hudson aiming to have 20 000 songs available on the title's launch, and an extra 1000 each month. This title will be set up somewhat differently than normal WiiWare games, however - karaoke enthusiasts will download the program for the title from a dedicated server, which will also be the home of the songs Hudson will upload.

Pricing hasn't been determined for the downloadable content, although it's being said that the songs will be downloadable on a subscription basis (unlimited amount over a certain time period), rather than song-by-song. It'll also be released in two separate versions, as a download for WiiWare and as a package, which will include a USB microphone and possibly extra features. The USB microphone will also be sold separately for those who choose the WiiWare version.

Hudson also detailed their WiiWare strategy, firstly by noting that approximately 40% of the 20 million Wiis sold worldwide so far (which totals around 8 million) are connected online. Hudson intends to capitalise on this install base by concentrating on 3 key areas: their knowledge of making multiplayer games, using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection 'to connect the community, to make the player face each other, or on the contrary, cooperate with each other', and making games that 'that take into account the fact that the family or the visiting friends make use of the console too.'

The karaoke extravaganza is expected to launch in Japan in their Summer.
