Re the boiling point about the song choice of thrash metal...
Not a huge fan of the heavier types of metal myself but the key word with song choice of course is not song but CHOICE. Some folks dig it, some folks don't. That's the case with all art. Music - even that at karaoke - is not immune to this law. Your best bet is to zone out to the songs you don't like or find something better to do till something easier to stomach comes on. If the genre you don't like becomes the staple choice of punters at the venue, then you could either grin and bare it, only visit occasionally or take your business elsewhere to a karaoke that better suits - if you have the option.
IMHO, song choice should only be restricted if children are in the audience or among the participants. If a song is from an album with a parental warning on it, then it should not be allowed to be sung by kids or in their presence. Realistically, those kids probably have the album regardless of the warning or at the very least, the mp3 of the song in question but there may still be some who don't and a responsible host will not allow its play.
I would hope a host familiarises him/herself with the tracks they have and makes note of those with explicit lyrics (by today's standards). Some hosts choose to not play such songs in an RSL environment for example. Kind of difficult to maintain that policy without knowing which songs the policy applies to, after all ;)
