From the Where2sing.com forum:

As someone who has travelled around to a fair few shows and been privy to a fair few competitions, I have to say firstly that there is a huge standard difference in the karaoke of Melbourne to Sydney. The talent that exists at the $10000 first prize competitions in Sydney far outweighs the talent that exists in any competition in melbourne, let alone the BPM Entertainment Karaoke Idol. And do not misinterpret the '$10000' comp. First prize will be only about $1000 or thereabouts ... there will be a few categories and venue prizes and heat prizes and a male and female winner (that part I applaud) so that makes up the $10000. BPM are very good at marketing!!

Music Addict, you obviously do not talk much with some of the people who are in the $10000 first prize competitions in Sydney, becos many of them are in successful and surviving cover bands already. These competitions allow them to participate. And there are a few others who have the vocals and entertainment pizazz to make it in cover bands as well but they choose not to and continue to view karaoke as a hobby and the odd competition as a bonus.

The point of a competition: as a host I thought you would understand that the poker machine tax in Australia has venues having what is called a Community fund where they are sposed to give back to the community. That is why at some places they have major raffles and the like (tell me the point of them either cos as soon as the member raffles are over places get deserted a lot of the time!). Some venues choose to put on a karaoke competition to give back to the community. You should be happy as a host that they do, shouldnt you? After all, they provide for your income as well!! I say again tho, that a good high talent competition can drag people in to watch just as much as a good live band can. But when the talent is poor no one really wants to watch and only regulars would stay.

JB, I agree that someone should be able to choose any song they like, but if the song is mainly instrumental like with a 5 minute guitar outro then it should not be played or it should be cut as teh instrumental starts. Karaoke is about singing along, not listening to an instrument solo!
