From the Where2sing.com forum:

Rob Deal and Leather Baron,
I think you underestimate the marketing of a good comp, do not understand that some venues have to give money away for poker machine tax (Community Fund ... so good that the do it in karaoke rather than raffles hey?), stereotype all comp people as non-drinkers (I know of many who are big drinkers), underestimate the power of a good singer to get people to the venue to watch them, and stereotype what karaoke is ... as I have said before, some people view karaoke as more than just a hobby, more than just fun, not just 5 minutes of fame, but as a learning tool, as a way to improve their craft ... you seem to allude that karaoke is only for the bad singers. Karaoke is for everyone and like all forms of art or sport, we get judged on them (sometimes whether we like it or not). There will always be competitions ... poetry, sport, literature, song writing, dance, ... so why not embrace them rather than putting them down all the time. People still find competitions fun as well!!! If they werent fun then why do competitions still for the most part get the numbers of people trying in them.

If the comps you have run have not produced extra takings for the club, is it really the comp itself or the way it was advertised and run? I can tell you that some comps make lots of money in takings, particularly for the finals! And that is why they continue to survive!
