Believer: Umm.. if you were in a successful (business-wise) cover band you wouldn't need to enter competitions but I can understand those that could but don't want to as the hours are long. However, my observations weren't from a singers perspective but from a host perspective. I still don't believe that they are needed to bring in a sustainable money-spending crowd which is the venues objective. And I base this on some of the most successful venues in NSW ( which aren't on the top ten list because you only get one song in :P ) yet have FAR more people attending than other venues running expensive competitions. As a singer I would turn up to those competitions ( who wouldn't? ) but the one I'm thinking of just annoys me with the lack of organization.

RSL clubs might need to flush the pokie cash but the pub arena, which I'm most familiar with, doesn't rely on pokies for peak nights. The pokie revenue comes in early morning and late at night on different nights.

If the $10,000 competition is the one I'm thinking of I'm not impressed. I was at the semi's and it was full of one-trick ponies which imho do not have enough material to fill a 4 hour show of covers and keep bums on seats. Sure, lots of vocal talent ( and a lot of organisational stuff-ups ) but not the talent of the sort to keep a cover band going imho. If anyone is actually interested in cover or even originals bands Redeeming Features nights around NSW are a good place to start.

BPM's competition sounds more reasonable when broken down but I'll still be fascinated to see how the winner goes with the tour. I don't have 8 hours per week for rehearsal time :P
