AUSTRALIAN Idol's Los Angeles auditions have been canned after judge Kyle Sandilands pulled out due to scheduling problems.
The United States auditions were due to be held on Sunday with Sandilands presiding over the judging.
Just hours after Tina Arena and Darren Hayes were announced as guest judges to scope the talent at the show's London auditions, an Australian Idol spokesman said Sandilands' conflicting schedule had caused the endeavour to be scrapped.
Production being stretched for its London auditions was another big factor, the spokesman added. 'London has been massive for us and we've had an overwhelming response to London,' he said. 'Kyle's timetable was a factor of us not being able to do all our commitments as well.'
The auditions had been inspired largely by the success of Australian Michael Johns, who is wowing audiences on American Idol.
Arena and Hayes will pair up with ex-pat Pommy judge Ian 'Dicko' Dickson and co-host James Matheson, who flies out to London tomorrow to help unearth Australian talent in the UK.
The success of Perth performer Michael Johns on the latest series of American Idol and Irish crooner Damien Leith taking the Australian Idol title two years ago has led producers to cast the net around the world. Hayes said: 'As an Australian entertainer living in London I definitely have a soft spot for Aussies trying to make it overseas. 'Rather than judging people, I'm going to be looking for that little bit of magic that someone once saw in me. I think potential is a huge criteria for a musical career and hopefully Tina and I can help discover some. I love Dicko and Tina so I'm sure I'm going to have a blast.'
