AMERICAN Idol audiences voted him off the show, but Aussie Michael Johns has been embraced by Hollywood and even US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
In a bizarre moment for the Perth-born singer, Johns was invited to the White House correspondents dinner over the weekend, where he was mobbed by Rice, Rob Lowe and the press corp gushing about his talent.
'Condoleezza Rice came up and hugged me, asked to take a picture and have an autograph,' Johns told Confidential yesterday. 'Rob Lowe demanded a recount, everyone thinks I was robbed.'
With such friends in high places, Johns might not need the show's title to prove a winner.
After failing at three attempts at a US record deal previously, the rocker has been bombarded with offers from various labels and said he's 'confident of having an album out by this time next year'.
He can count on his TV mentor Dolly Parton for song-writing help, after she offered to pen him songs the morning after his Idol eviction. The pair bonded over Johns childhood memories of meeting her as an eight-year-old in Perth during the America's Cup.
'My step-grandfather ran a boat company and Dolly and Kenny Rogers were in town and came out with us one day,' he said. 'I told her (during Idol) I remembered her particularly because she was the only lady who refused to take off her high heels on board. She just laughed over the pictures I had and the outfit she was wearing.'
His popularity has prompted Fox 8 to fly Johns to Sydney on May 5 for a promotional visit. The Idol series is in its last weeks, airing on Wednesday and Thursday locally.
