VICTORIANS TAKE OVER : SAMMO'S RIGHT OF REPLY (2)
THE SOUND AT MALAYA
I will let you into a secret ... everything's pre-set on my mixing
board (there's a lot more underneath and inside than what the cover
says), and yes, the knobs will twist and turn, but they don't do
nothing (not unless I flick a certain switch that's out of sight ...
which I did do for Adam) ... they are there mainly for show, for the
experts who want to mix themselves, giving them the satisfaction of
fingering a few knobs and switches, and offering them peace of
mind ... much better than arguing with them or telling them straight
that they are in 'my house' now and that they just have to cop
the 'house-sound' (together with all the other 'house-rules') !!

Much like Wolf and James T. Orr and their not-turned-on foldbacks!
And Adam putting on the special EFX on the foldback for some singers,
but not through to the FOH speakers! We all have our little bag of
tricks for the fussy karaoke punters!!

How things SHOULD sound is as personal as choosing your own tie for
your business attire, or your choice of haircut or hair colour, or
the type of woman / man you lust for! I guess no more than 2
persons in any karaoke room will agree to what's 'a perfect sound'
or 'what's a perfect mix' to his / her ears and personal liking.

So the sound at MALAYA is set to MY ears, and set to MY very PERSONAL
liking, and it's been like that for the last 8 years. And as taught
to us in all the 'Live Sound Production' TAFE courses, I always 're-
tune the room' again, every night, with my first song, and which the
sound gurus all tell us should be 'the most familiar song in your
repertoire' - hence the same familiar first song all the time for all
the shows. And if that opening performance sounds right, to my ears,
to my personal liking, then I am set for the night, and I will then
flick the auto-pilot on, so that others can twiddle whatever knobs
they want to their hearts' content and they won't mess with MY
PREFERRED sound.

And I make no apology for that.

It's set the way I like it, lots of top and lots of bottom, thin in
the middle (exactly the way I like my women ... hahaha!)

BUT for friends like Adam, I do give in and let them mix themselves,
to a certain degree ... it's a bloody big deal for me to do that ...
it's like offering them the TV remote when they come to visit me at
home ... or it's like letting them sit in my favourite armchair or
use my favourite coffee mug !!
