| From the Where2sing.com forum: Kev, as much as I love my local and the karaoke hosts, it is not always an atmosphere of 'fun and laughter with many new people'. The Club would get a lot more of such if they showed they valued us. Indeed, some of the staff have notoriously turned away people at the door as 'drunk' who were long-standing members who hadn't even as yet started drinking. So I do think the management looks down on us. That certainly was the 2nd rate citizen treatment we got at Gordon. I recall Willoughby Hotel used to have karaoke on after the game and it was much as you described - wait til game finish then start singing.
My whole problem with this pastime is the way we get treated by club/pub management and intruders - not about decent hosts or fellow singers, whatever their musical style or ability. And I am still of the belief that the more we encourage drunken hooning the lower our reputation stays. You, Kev, seem to take your vocation seriously as does Rising Star and from what you say it seems to pay off in your venue. But, as we saw at Gordon, all that goodwill can evaporate when the same team goes 3 blocks down the road to a different venue/management.
There should be room for all. Sadly, there are a lot of people who want us to fail.
