Good Day Tentmaker, Tish and forum members.
Tentmaker - your question is valid and relevant - unfortunately there
is no easy answer. These are just a few of my thoughts which of course are arguable.

I think we need to start by remembering that for each of us, music is a very personal thing. I treasure my music
collection - thousands of recordings - each has been hand picked - by me. At some future time this will
become the property of someone else who could, without hesitation, pack it up and drop it off at Vinnies. Like it or not,
I have to accept that. The same idea relates to our performances.

The wonderful thing about karaoke is that we can make it what ever we want it to be. If we want to sing our favourite song - no matter how obscure - we can. What we don't get however is a guarantee that it will wow the audience - although sometimes we can get a very pleasant surprise if the song just happens to connect - especially if it is done well. If we want to please an audience and a judge, we will be more likely to succeed if we choose a funky song (with a high quality backing track!)and put on a bit of a show.
I think that is very important to connect with an audience - after all - singing/performing is just another form of communication. The folk who understand the 'audience connection factor' very well are the comp chasers - moreover - they know the songs that will work magic when done well. Some notable classic songs include 'Just a Gigolo', 'Mack the Knife', 'Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show', 'Without Love'...among others. They understand that more often than not, a judging panel will consider audience response as critical to the success of the performance.
(as an aside...wouldn't it be interesting if contestants had to declare the number of times they have performed a particular song in a comp....I am sure that some folk should be paying the songwriters (or their estates) royalties - given the amount of money they have won with their songs!) . Nevertheless I will defend the right of comp chasers to do what they do. We all get the same opportunity.
Unfortunately when it comes to judging - not all are created equal - and this is where the heartaches begin - but I have prattled too long already.
PS Loved your rendition of 'The Prayer' Tentmaker
