I can't properly describe how it is done, just that it requires careful psychology. A small number of songbooks, control of the songslips and pens also helps.
Once a song is submitted however, it always goes into the queue so I see it the wranglers fault if the night ends up dreary-heavy ( I'm not going to use the word ballad as I've been surprised before with people who twist them into something exciting and appropriate to the time of night ).
Other approaches I've seen are a short-list of songs that are failsafe crowd pleasers, a clear warning that songs may be put up in a different order than submitted and the usual 'No slow songs' warning. The last two I suspect would upset guest singers ( eg me if I'm at someone else's gig ) so I'd prefer not to use them.
LB is only upset because we won't let him sing another song unless he does the Mary Poppins song first :p
