From the Where2sing.com forum:

Today's Boiling Point is an interesting one: Does a venue (or even just a karaoke operator) have the right to deny a singer the right to sing? In a perfect world, I would say while they have the right to, they shouldn't. Karaoke is one of those equal opportunity hobbies where the goal is ultimately to provide a spirited atmosphere and be entertaining and that doesn't always (and sometimes simply doesn't) mean that the singers have to be good. Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world. I've seen patrons refused entry to a venue (which of course prevents them from singing), I've seen patrons denied service (which of course reduces the likelihood of them singing as they probably won't be around for much longer) and I myself and refused to allow a singer onto the stage due mainly to excessive intoxication (though on one occasion due to bad behaviour). At certain times, I have a simple test, if you can't write your name and the name of a song on a request slip, you're probably too drunk to respect the equipment that I'm using (though I will of course make allowances for 'special needs' patrons).

So should a patron be refused access to sing? Ideally not, but it shouldn't be a right that is removed from a host or venue if applied responsibly.
