I haven't been for a while as Monday is Topgear + weightlifting night for me :p I'd say modern, upbeat stuff goes well here. Funky venue with a subway across the road if your feeling hungry.
Never been to the Strike bowling bar in King St I'm afraid.
RE: Open mic nights, my experience has been mainly with one company and the cover charge was $8 on the door. Note that this attracted Aria award-wining artists so may not be typical of open mic nights in general.
