I agree with Vic .. it is about the entertainment. I have quite a few one off shows, quite a few private ones, and they all love the actual entertainment of the night.
Every venue is different though. Some have heaps of karaoke singers that come alone, just to sing. Others have singers that bring friends, and some venues have people that don't want to sing, but enjoy watching.
Always good fun. Entertainment value is so important. One place that I go every year is just for the holiday crowd. The singers are all ages, from kids, babes in arms, oldies, families, o/s visitors. Because they are only there for about a week, no one knows anyone. by the end of the night it's a different story!
