From the Where2sing.com forum:

David I have to disagree.
The monitor for singers should be big enough for the average person to be able to read the lyrics.
It should also be placed so that the singer/s are generally facing the main area of the audience.
And I also believe that it should be free from other written material.
Why you may ask?
Most people singing rely heavily on the written words on screen (lyrics) in order to be able to sing there song.
With written material around the monitor it would get confusing to say the least.
Some songs are hard enough to follow without having the add distraction of how to hold your microphone.
I’m like Vic if people cup their mic they are turned down or told.
If a singer holds the mic away from themselves (naval height) they are told to hold it closer.
If someone swears for the sake of swearing their mic is turned off.
Most times Hosts have to work harder for the minority of singers because of the way in which the microphone is held ,…but hey that’s part of our job.
