| From the Where2sing.com forum: In reply to the comment about the 'massive shift in the attitude of some people to w2s since it became a 'subscriber site', it's a sad truth that something that is free is viewed as having no value. W2S was regularly trashed during these 'free' months, and very little information was being contributed - I was providing almost all the research and information, and that was not a sustainable website model.
Naturally it was a shock to people to be asked to subscribe to something that had been free, but W2S as a subscription site is very different from that initlal free site - something that those complaining seem to have forgotten. Hundreds of hours of programming went into the new W2S, and it seems fair to me that those who don't wish to subscribe do instead have the option of providing a small amount of feedback instead of money.
Those who are unhappy with providing either money or feedback tend now to rely on secondhand infomation from W2Sers who do provide money or feedback - and thus W2S now has very much the same market reach but filtered via those who contribute some benefit to the site.
Would it be possible to make W2S free yet keep all its value? I think not, because any form of advertising revenue to replace subscriptions would make it very difficult for W2Sers to comment honestly on any gig.
However, I'm always open to debate on this one.
