Karaokebug, not sure what a choral mic is,(one we all gather around ?) but I guess the same would apply as an overhead mic,you'll pick up too much background noise.Hand held &shotgun mics have the pick-up further down inside (to avoid background noise) You need to get in close to hand held mic any mic to get any real volume out of it. I reckon as a rule of thumb, every 50mm distance away from the mic , you lose 20.% volume. Getting in close allows enough volume while minimising risk of feedback. Cheaper than bringing your own mic might be bringing your own foam cover.
