Pacific Dawn Passengers Cleared for Normal Disembarkation
Date: 01 Jun 2009
All passengers on P&O Cruises’ Pacific Dawn have been cleared for disembarkation in Sydney this morning and will be able to travel home unrestricted after leaving the ship.

This follows final tests which confirmed that no passengers onboard the ship have swine flu.

The superliner berthed at Wharf 8 Darling Harbour at about 8am.

Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises, said the clean bill of health for passengers was testament to the cruise line’s strict health standards, which exceeded World Health Organisation recommendations.

“We have worked very closely with authorities and taken an extremely conservative approach to managing our passengers and crew’s health, so we are very pleased that our passengers have been cleared to disembark normally this morning.”

Three crew members on the ship have recovered after being treated for the human swine flu virus and remain in isolation.

Ms Sherry thanked passengers onboard Pacific Dawn for their patience over the past week.

“Despite the fact that they have not had the holiday they planned, our passengers have been incredibly understanding about the situation and aware that this situation has been out of P&O Cruises’ control.”

Ms Sherry said Pacific Dawn would sail on her next cruise on Thursday June 4 as scheduled.

“Every cabin is booked and we have 2000 passengers who are now eagerly awaiting their South Pacific holiday.”

Ms Sherry said that before Pacific Dawn sailed on Thursday it would undergo a rigorous cleaning and sanitisation program with products known to be effective in fighting flu.

“Meanwhile P&O Cruises will continue to enforce a range of strict measures to reduce the risk of swine flu, amongst passengers and crew. This includes:

Screening our passengers before they embark the ship, with a number of measures including thermal imaging equipment. In addition, any passenger who declares they may be suffering flu-like symptoms is checked by one of our ship doctors before they board.
Communicating with our passengers and crew that they should take extra care to practice healthy habits such as washing their hands often.
Asking passengers and crew to report to the medical centre immediately if they exhibit any symptoms of flu. These passengers will be treated free-of-charge.
As necessary, isolating and treating passengers and crew with suspect H1N1. Anti-viral medications that effectively treat the swine flu are currently available onboard all ships.
Providing information on swine flu including managing hygiene and identifying symptoms.
