From the Where2sing.com forum:

Hi Ace
I don't regularly host, but did a stint last year, where we also ran a comp. I still do the occasional karaoke hosting job, which I love doing, and know some of the challenges.
My boss, generally ran comps in a slightly different way. Regular karaoke first, ie warm up song, then comp for a set time, then finished with regular karaoke. This worked well if there were quite a few competition singers, if there were only a couple of new entries for the comp, then slotting them in amongst other singers worked well. I would announce though, that I was giving preference during that time to new singers in the comp for that round of singing. Singer's who had already qualified seemed to understand.

The scenarios you mentioned I wouldn't attend as really attending, unless there is a good reason, like family, to leave, like on Thurs where I was going to stay longer, but got a call from family to come home, car problems.
Attendance could be anything over an hour in my opinion.
I know I went out of my way especially to come to the show at Greyhound club, and except for the last night dramas, I stayed for over an hour and purchased a drink and/or food.

BTW the Old Guy at the desk had told me on an occasion that he had nothing to do with the Competition, to speak to you. I started to say, oh ok I was just... he abruptly told me, You're not listening to me I told you to speak to them, it is nothing to do with us.
I have spoken with him in passing a few times now, and he recognised me, and haven't found him a good ambassador for the club at all. I don't envy you if you have to deal with him... :)

I often do pop in on a karaoke show after a gig, even if for half an hour, if I finish early.

I too think that a host shouldn't hog a show, maximum one song per round. If really busy, then preference should be given to singers.
