Welcome to my world
Welcome. My name is Steve Wilkins and some people know me from Hawkesbury Radio 89.9 FM. This amazing radio station is a community station 60 km (35 miles) from Sydney, the home of the 2000 Olympics. I have many roles with the station. I do the breakfast show 2 days a week, I sell advertising for the station, write, produce and voice many of the ads (some say toooo many and call it Wilko FM!) help out on the technical side and I get to anchor most of our outside broadcasts.
Other areas of my life are that on the weekends, I work karaoke/disco nights. It is painful as I listen to people strangle songs like My Way, Footloose and many more. But, I do admire their courage to get and prove to the world that they cannot sing. That takes...something.
I have recently been doing traffic reports for Australian Traffic Network. I have been doing paid work in Sydney Radio. The Number 1 market in Australia. That has given me a strange peace and new appreciation for the magic we have at Hawkesbury Radio, where we have a freedom to create great radio and to be responsible for what comes out. I have learned amazing things about the industry and myself from this experience.
In future posts, I will tell you about my journey into radio and why it should have happened many years earlier but I needed the help of a special lady to get me started. Come back often as I will be updating at least twice a week and give you the material we do on radio, interesting links, some lame joles and a whole lot more
