MOST anyone can sing a 'pretty' song - perfect in every technical detail, but hey! that's no big deal, really!!
Like you said, winning comps require performers with that Individualistic 'X' Factor, and, who is both 'current' and 'relevant' to the 2000s.
I don't think the world wants another Elvis, another Frank, another MJ, another Aretha, another Celine, another Beyonce ..... we don't need impersonators with no personalities of their own, we already have the originals, and let us leave it at that!
You may disagree with me on this next opinion of mine (I know a lot of singers do):
Musical theatre songs and show-tunes have NO PLACE in a karaoke competition.
I agree with the Oz and US Idol judges when they chastise a singer for being too 'showy' or too 'theatrical' ... and uttering cutting comments like '... but that's musical theatre ...' or ' .... that's too Broadway ...' just like they would with '.... but that's just karaoke ....'
Quite often karaoke comp judges (at least one of then) have a musical theatre background - and there you have it - their inherent bias, in favour of singers who choose to sing a show-tune.
