Under your premise of 'ok as long as not making money from it' that would mean that 1 person could spend $20 and buy a certain cd and then copy it for all and sundry ... in fact for the whole world if that was possible and it would not be considered copyright. Then the original band gets their $20 for their one sale of the cd and apart from becoming very well known does not get anything more.
Fortunately, the copyright laws do not allow any music to be copied unless for the purposes David mentioned.
