David: It's interesting to re-read some of my old notes on hosting (especially the article I wrote for W2S 3 years ago now about my first night of hosting at Kelly's On King). I did indeed have a very strict set of rules, mainly because I'm very statistics and rules orientated and having been bred by customer service in an office environment, its in my nature to seek assessment. The key (for me anyway) has not necessarily been hosting shows over X number of years but at a variety of different venues, each having their own different quirks. While its certainly true that any night at a particular venue can be different from the last, you usually get a certain pattern because of the venue's location, it's availability to parking or public transport or the opening and closing times of other venues in the area. This set of 'predictable variables' usually means that while it can happen, you usually end up with a relatively similar flow each night whether that be a dribble of new singers, a constant stream of people who often only want one song et al.

There have been places that have been slow and have demanded a more cabaret style of hosting and others that are so busy that you just have to shut the hell up and move through people as quickly as humanly possible. The three hour second rotations of one place in particular really gets you thinking up inventive ways of asking people to be patient... lol.

In my view, the best thing a new host can do is be on the mic at a number of different venues and put their preconceptions and newly forming ways of doing things through multiple grillings, much like a scientific peer review process but much more internal. I know that for me personally, if I was at Albert's Tavern in North Sydney every week for 3 years with its 45 minute rotations on a busy night, I'd have no idea how to handle Royal Hotel which one night had a 3 hour second rotation, or vice versa...
