Like Spoonster said, the Social Secretaries or Social Events Organisings Committees of large corporations aren't usually savvy about prices - particularly in the accounting and legal industries that I specifically target. With me and my daughter practising a combined 50 years in these industries, we have cultivated and maintained life-time associations with many of the Top 5 firms in each industry, and as such, my 'troupe' does a few of their corporate do's year-in, year-out ....
And with an average of 1200-1500 'quality' guests at these black-tie events, getting the well-paid private gig out of them is a cinch too.
The most lavish of end of financial year / Xmas event holder goes to a legal firm, with a budget of $25,000 for each event just for entertainment alone! At my last gig for them, they also had the Lisa Edwards Band (90 minutes for $5500), Dave Hughes the Comedian ($7700 for around 45 minutes of stand-up), and they had 6 roving magicians and jugglers too .... We were the 'filler' - had to be there to set-up at around 5pm, and we didn't leave till past 2am.
A recurring private birthday-bash held in St Georges Road, Toorak, with marquees and all in the vast 'back-yard', also a black-tie event, pays just as well, and that's in cash with no receipt requested!
There's a whole lot more to this industry than the 8-10 week pub gig, if one can put together a 'complete show', a 'total package', that can stretch 4-5-6 hours.
But in the end, it all boils down to 'WHO you know' .... and what you set your niche market to be ....
And one has to maintain one's standing too - otherwise one will lose out on the well-paid snobby gigs. So, will I do a private show or a function in a 'blue-collar' suburb? No, No, No.
