From the Where2sing.com forum:

Ever since I started going to karaoke in the late 80's, I've seen the hosts sing at the start of every round. I don't have any problem with that at all, in fact I'd rather have an interactive host who joins in the fun rather than sit on the sidelines and do nothing more than call up the next singer. There's other reasons why I sing at the start of each round - 1) To showcase some of the newer songs. Quite often some of the regulars would love to try these newer tracks but just aren't sure how it goes and give it a go after seeing me do it. 2) to involve the crowd more. Some nights everyone picks power ballad after power ballad and the general crowd gets bored hearing nothing but slow songs, that's when I will do something upbeat and get them singing and dancing along 3) requests. some people are too scared to try singing by themselves and ask for me to sing with them, or sing a song for them. Pretty much every great show I've been to has the host singing at the start of each round and I don't see this as a negative at all.
