If, in order to compete, most hosts dropped their price then that would be the going rate and 'traditionally priced' hosts would be seen as expensive. Now one might say that the cheaper prices wouldn't be sustainable but (excluding the illegal operators), there's always a cheaper and not necessarily nastier way of doing something.
Take songs acquisition for example. At the moment, hosts buy discs they think people might want to sing songs off of but by and large, they are an empty investment because the vast majority of songs on any host's list will never be sung. They're there 'just in case', more choice and all that. Down the track though, you're going to see a lot more laptop operators and faster 3G speeds and you won't have to buy the song, you'll stream it; maybe pay a monthly subscription for an unlimited account and never have to worry about whether or not to buy that song because it's on the server whether someone wants to sing it or not. The server can keep track of what artists are being requested and use that as a guide to who to tap into for more karaoke tracks.
Supply and demand, it takes a while for it to filter through, but it's the reason we have sites like where2sing, isn't it...
