For instance, any deficiency in one over the other might be due to things such as equipment used, use of equipment by the operator, even down to the leads and connections. Indeed, it could even come down to the distance the speakers were placed from each other and from the singer. What you'd really need to do is have the show run inside with the same gear in the same configuration as you would outside. Only then would you know if the fact that it was outside was the reason it was a better sound.
