Tea and coffee in gaming rooms is totally different as it's more for keeping patrons in the venue longer and increasing the spend and a venue does not risk a fine if it makes somebody pay for a tea or coffee (a lot of places now have a gold or silver coin donation to local charities, sports clubs, etc for their 'free' tea and coffee)
I can't vouch for country area pubs but a lot of the venues in Melbourne with no pokie or TAB trade are just as guilty of screwing patrons with price gouging as the larger pokie venue chains, etc
When your local corner pub sells a pot of beer for $3.80 (cost to venue 88 cents or similiar) and then sells bottles of Frantelle 600ml water for $5 (cost to venue 20 - 35 cents) then there's a problem
You'll still get the 'serious' karaoke crowd that nurses a glass of water, coke or raids the 'free' gaming tea/coffee as we have had for years anyway but all this is doing is stamping out a practice that should have been stamped out years ago (at least now the 'cute' hot water only in bathrooms at some venues should stop as well)
