Live music fans were out in their thousands this afternoon to protest against new laws being imposed on Melbourne's nightlife.
SLAM (Save Live Australia's Music) is an organisation set up to do just that, save the future of live music in Australia. The rally was organised in response to the government's plan to change liquor licensing in Victoria in a bid to curb late night violence in the city.
Many music-goers, industry insiders and even the artists themselves are strongly opposed to this because the majority of city violence occurs around club venues rather than live music venues and therefore a blanket liquor law is not appropriate.
To show their support, SLAM organised a rally which drew thousands of punters, music industry people and musicians to the CBD to give protest.
The protest kicked off at 4pm at the State Library on Swanston Street before heading up Bourke Street and terminating at Parliament House in a scene paying homage to Aussie rock legends AC/DCs 'Long Way To The Top' video!
Celebrities present included Spiderbait star Kram, You Am I's Tim Rogers, Missy Higgins, the True Lies, Brian Nankervis, Paul Kelly, Claire Bowditch, Paul Dempsey, Wilbur Wilde, Scott from The Living End and more.
According to news reports, Victorian Premier John Brumby made an offer earlier today to relax the proposed liquor licensing laws for live music venues.
This news comes after famous live music venue The Tote was forced to close down recently due to higher licensing costs.
