I disagree with it not adding to the postcode search you have at the moment.
Dreamscapes (and others like it) would mean that you could use this data base to show adjoining/surrounding suburbs. And using this data base you can actually set your own distance measurement for searches or use it in anyway you would like. It is just a data bast that means that you dont have to pay someone to add all the lat long co-ordinates for each suburb.
You dont have to add the lat and long for each venue either. Just using the suburb in your already existing database for venues, it can be linked to this list so that it can then be used with google maps if you want it, or just list the 5 closest venues to a particular postcode/suburb or 10 closest venues, or 10 closest venues running shows on a Friday, the lat and long work is already done with this list. How it is used on your website is up to you.
The businesses, distances etc used in the examples are just examples only of how this kind of database can be used.
It is possible with your site to do a post code search for a venue and as you say, widen your search by finding the post codes in the surrounding area, but it is not by any means simple.
Where do you go to find the postcodes for surround areas, it isn't a matter of just going up or down a number. Some postcodes jump by 100 or 50 numbers and are right next door to each other.
Firstly you need to know where you are, say for instance my recent holiday to Trinity beach.
I have to google trininty beach first to see it on a map, then find the names of the surrounding suburbs (and look up their postcodes in case the names dont quite match - you know, Upper Beaconsfield or Beaconsfield Upper- then do a search on the W2S. Ok, surrounding suburbs, Kewarra beach, trinity park, yorkys knob, palm cove, Ellis beach. No nothing, so back to google maps again. find some more suburb names. And so on till you find one venue at Smithsfield, sorry, it was on last night so widen the search again......
The fact that even you 'widen your search' when looking for venues in surrounding areas would suggest that the option to 'widen your search to include surrounding venues' would be an improvement to this fantastic website. If 'all I could do with this is to have someone input a suburb or postcode, and then give a list of venues in that same suburb, or extend the range to adjacent postcodes' that in its self would be a great improvement for me. It think it would be very helpful to overseas visitors and tourists too.
David, I might be the only person that goes away on holidays to places that I have never been before, and the first thing I want to do is find the nearest karaoke venues. I might be the only person that thinks this kind of search would be an improvement to your site. I can only speak from my own experiences.
This is a brilliant site, there is nothing else like it.
I would love to hear from other singers/operators and see if they feel the same way, as I said, I might be the only one thinking this, or I might just be the only one saying it.
