From the Where2sing.com forum:

I would also have thought that there's insufficient revenue to give something away for free and rely on advertising, but Google has shown this to be incorrect - Google has a massive infrastructure, huge workforce, and still manages to offer Search totally free whilst doing rather nicely on advertising revenue. I think the point about today's business environment is that the web, which could potentially reach everyone in the world, has at last achieved critical mass.

As for karaoke disc production, NZ's Sundown has run from a kitchen table for years, Lyn doing an excellent job in buying tracks, turning them into karaoke, and compiling them on a disc to be shared with Capital Karaoke. That Capital doesn't operate from a kitchen table has to do with its method of distribution - take the phone call, manually process the order, find the disc (or put it on order), then ship to customer.

The cost of production of a karaoke disc is low - the price of discs is made up majorly by the price of making that disc, shipping it, and profit. If karaoke discs were just made by Lyn at Sundown, and downloaded by people from her website, 99c karaoke tracks would yeild her a respectable profit.

The fact that a 100 million dollar business such as CraigsList does operate from a small building with 25 staff indicates that the garage website is the proper basis for such as karaoke track production and distribution.
