From the Where2sing.com forum:

Malley Boy, I was waiting for you to get a glint in your eye over the possibility of picking up karaoke tracks for almost zero. Will it happen? I buy old books, and even though they're fifty years old or more, the market dictates that the price is well above the cover price. What will the market be for old karaoke discs? I guess the question is how many people will want to buy them.

As for the changeover, I used to think it would be years from now. I'm starting to think, however, that the tipping point is closer than we think because this is a commercial transaction - why buy a disc with 1 useful song and 9 duds that therefore makes the effective price of useful tracks as much as a whole disc, when $1.99 will currently buy you the one track you want. Why run discs and need a host and a techie,. when running from computer needs cuts the employment cost in halves? How long can hosts tied to a static box of discs hold out against those who can download the exact version for their singer on-the-fly? How can a host who has paid $5,000 for a stack of discs compete against some other host able to boast 40,000 karaoke tracks available whilst having spent $1.000 on a core set of tracks?

You say it would be silly for a host in their twilight years to go over to a computerised system, but it's not just the cost of the new system that has to be considered, but also the loss in value of the present disc system which may currently be worth a couple of thousand but which might soon be worth only a couple of hundred. Take away the market of new hosts who are now using downloaded tracks, and there may be no market at all for quantities of discs.

It also begs the question of why today's hosts would continue to buy discs, and if they start using a computer for the new tracks they want, then why not simply load their old discs onto computer, keep those discs for licensing reasons, but anyway kill dead the market for the further sale of discs. It all seems to point to a quick demise of the karaoke disc market, followed more slowly by the phasing out of discs altogether.

I like your idea of 'retro karaoke' and look forward to announcing a once-only memorial event on W2S in 2030. Just one question, will all our wheelchairs fit into the room? And imagine the joy of a roomful of Papa Franks....
