STEVE: I 100% agree and I too tend to tune out if a difficult song is sung perfectly. I am much more impressed if the vocal cracks, pitch overshoots, less than polished movements and bits that make up personality are kept and blended into a unique interpretation that works as a whole. If you attend St Patricks Taven on Wednesday nights you get to hear some great songs that work really well (waves at Mark, Kate and crowd). Classical vocals? nupe, Does it work as a whole? you bet!

JAMES has a good point, would Bob Dylan/Nick Cave get anywhere in a karaoke contest [I tried John Farnham in that spot last time hehe]? Would they get anywhere in an open mic night or similar? I reckon they would and have heard them and they add much to the richness of the night and are beautiful for the lack of 'Idol Moments'.

Somehow, I reckon throwing money away at random or being honest that the people who spend the most win the most is the easiest cop-out if you have to judge a creative art like singing as how the hell do you objectively score 'creative entertainment'?
