| From the Where2sing.com forum: LB, you've just had two singers tell you that they would prefer less singing by hosts. Now I don't want to tell you how to suck eggs, but, remember, they (WE) are you're ultimate customer. Sure the venue manager pays you but if we didn't turn up both of you would be up the creek, listen to those in the primary position. It usually pays. Venue managers can spruik that line all they want, but at the end of the day, you and the requests of YOUR customers (US) is all that counts. If a venue books you, they book you as you are not as they want. All that should count to a Venue Manager is bums on seats and drinks down throats, not who sings what, that's what you're there for and what you get paid for. I have just seen this dictating mentality of management getting it wrong at a local venue in Geelong. They cancelled a venue because they (thought they) were making no money, just as they get their biggest karaoke night ever!! What then happened was, another venue (only half a block away) snapped up that night within minutes of the last night announcement and has ALL of the regulars (at least) on side (10-15 people). Now I was taught in customer service courses that 1 irrate customer (and they are irrate!!) talks to (on average) 24 potential customers. Moral:- be careful who is in your crowd, they could pull the carpet from under you, AND, let management manage the show bookings not the shows as in this case managemet did have too much say in how the show was run as well which led to its ultimate demise (as it made it harder for people to get songs in by making the host start later) and will also lead to them now having NOBODY turning up on a Thursday now instead of 40-50 Meal eating and even more alcohol drinking patrons. We're all saying ROCK ON 1st JULY so we can stick it to The Elbow!! (As you can see, don't under-estimate the power of your regulars, look after them, they pay your wage more and have more influence than the venue does when it comes to the crunch!!)
