From the Where2sing.com forum:

David if you let the singers dictate your show you might as well put a karaoke juke box up there as far as i'm concerned. I don't think you can ever run a 'fair' as you call it show. You will always still get someone who will complain that they cannot get a song or have waited too long . They make up stories and tell you you changed it and one person has had 5 songs while others had one! From what I've seen most hosts accept a persons 3 songs and they are then gauranteed of their place in the queue, which they fuction in rounds, eg. 1st round, 2nd round, 3 rd round. It is very predictable and it keeps the singers very happy. Yes, they know when they are next and are guaranteed no one will jump the queue. The host is at the mercy of the singers and has no control of his show. So if someone happens to turn up, maybe he is late for a good reason, maybe he doesn't know about the 'systems' of karaoke he is just a good singer or even an awesome singer and you know he is, then you do not allow this person a song??? Well the poor people on the bar who get sick of hearing and seeing the same people every week singing the 'same old boring songs' as they will put it, and the general listeners of the talent and there are many at some shows who do not sing but come just to listen, can predict who will get up and exactly what they will sing again. It makes for a boring and predictable show. I guess you piss off some people but it happens anyway. I would like to think that i run an interesting, exciting show with a great variety of singers and faces. My philosophy is if you get to sing a song then be happy. I f you get to sing two songs be even happier. If you get to sing more than two songs then be ecstatic! yeeha! Hell at the end of the day it is about having a good time. I find the people who generally are there to have a good time are happy to have just one or two songs and they mingle and enjoy their night out. They never complain, they are always polite and these are the kind of guys I love to have at my shows! Blown out ego's who dictate to me and the public I do not have much time for ! Quite frankly they can be rude and arrogant and no one really wants to be subjected to their egotistical performances which is just all about themself. I run a rotation show but I will be flexible where I choose to be. After all I am running the show! I do actually explain to my audience when I choose to add someone or change something over the microphone. Sometimes I ask the public what they want and they soon cheer out loud a big yes !!! Everyone has their own style of hosting and mine works for me. Singers who want a systematic predictable show go to those shows. People who want variety come to mine! LOl ! Hey I love karaoke and we all have a good time! I am spontaneous and I love it!
