Wolf - Do you happen to know what year that was?

Re: Song Choice, I usually get a feel for the venue before choosing all but the first of my songs. I will usually choose a slow one first, more to warm the voice up than to cater for the slower end of the evening. But if it is a cruisy show, such as Steve from Karaoke Kool's Sunday Monash gig here in Melbourne, you can expect that all the songs will be a slow to mid tempo. Where as If I was in a packed venue, you can be assured I will break out the Kings Of Leon, Ugly Kid Joe or Puddle Of Mudd!! LOL!! (Or all 3 for that matter!! ;) ) It is almost as important for the regular singers to get a feel for the night as it is for the host I think. Personally myself, picking the right song for the crowd at a particular venue can be quite a rush, especially when you nail it!!
