Karaoke path to stardom
----------------------------------------------------------------
TWEED DAILY NEWS - Kirsty Noffke | 21st July 2010

Luke Hodgson will compete in the Queensland Karaoke Championships this weekend, hoping to make the national finals and eventually represent Australia in the Karaoke World Championships in Moscow.

KARAOKE may seem like an unusual path to fame, but Banora Point singer Luke Hodgson is hoping it will launch his career.

The 21-year-old will this Saturday belt it out in the Queensland finals of the Karaoke World Championships being held at the Coolangatta Tweed Heads Golf Club from 2pm.

“This is the first time I’ve been in something so big,” Mr Hodgson said.

“It’s a great opportunity.

“Of course it would be great to win, but there are 40 other contestants, so I’m going in there just to have a good time and hope for the best.”

If Mr Hodgson is successful in the state finals, he will compete the same night at the same venue in the Australian grand final against 10 interstate finalists for the chance to represent Australia at the world finals in Moscow in September.

“I’m more excited than nervous. It’s great to just get the chance to perform in front of an audience.”

Mr Hodgson wowed judges with Michael Buble’s Lost during a heat at Twin Towns Services Club earlier this month.

“It was pretty tough competition; there were some great singers there,” he said.

“And every-one seemed to enjoy themselves.”

Mr Hodgson said his goal in life was to be a professional singer.

“I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember.

“I was in the School Spectacular in Sydney in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

“I like to sing jazz and swing songs, like Frank Sinatra and Michael Buble.”

The Karaoke World Championships, now in their eighth year, are hosted in 30 countries and have become an invaluable opportunity for aspiring vocalists to perform in front of an international audience, gain exposure and further their ambitions.

Finals have been held in Darwin, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Tamworth, Launceston, Broken Hill, Canberra, Airlie Beach and Adelaide, and the winners will travel to Tweed Heads this weekend.

Previous Karaoke World Champions have walked away with thousands of dollars in cash and prizes, including overseas trips and recording deals with IVK Music Finland.

Australia has proudly won the world title a record-breaking three times in a row.
