CRAPPY SONG SELECTIONS Part 1:
Hey MB. You are taking my comment completely out of context. My reference to “crappy song selections” is made in the context of my report on 2 Karaoke Competition Semi-Finals I attended.

Before I go into more details as to what in my opinion constitutes a “crappy song selection” for a Karaoke Competition Semi-Final (or for any karaoke competition for the matter), let me comment on karaoke competition song selections in general:

Over-riding consideration: For most such competitions, contestants have but 2 songs to sing. So, the contestants each has 2 chances – 2 X 5 minutes (max) stints on stage to really impress the judges and the audience.

So, to me, song choices are then paramount – so, to me, in 2 X 5 minute performances a contestant has to showcase EVERYTHING he / she has to offer as a performer.

When it comes to the Semi-Final / Final of any karaoke competition, it’s highly likely that 80% (or higher) of the contestants CAN REALLY SING - so, to me, it all comes down to the RIGHT song choices by the contestants so that they can shine above everybody else and showcase their EVERY talent as a performer in 2 short stints on stage ….

(For the record: Out of the context of karaoke competitions, to me, NO SONG SELECTION is crappy when it comes to run-of-the-mill karaoke song selections – it’s all in fun – and every selection has its place in any rotation at any time of the night. I for one, as a host, do not juggle the songs - like discarding ballads after a certain time because some people want to dance, etc. – I always tell my audience that I run a karaoke show, and it’s a show which is like dipping your hand into a box of Cadbury Roses Chocolates and pulling one out – you never know what you are going to get next … and that if they want to dance, or listen to a particular genre of songs / singers, please do go to a dance-club or attend a concert ... mine is a karaoke show through and through with a mixture of good and terrible singers, slow and fast songs, all night long!!)
