| From the Where2sing.com forum: Yes, I agree with the majority of you, that karaoke provides a good training ground for a novice performer.
To me, karaoke provides the perfect platform to bring out the real artistes in us all – because a karaoke singer has to work within the confines of someone else’s backing track, with very little room for personalisation and rearrangement. Anyone can sing a “pretty” song, a perfect clone of the original recording but who wants to be a mimic?? The artistry of a karaoke singer can shine through if he / she can work within the constraints of someone else’s backing track and turn it into HIS / HER song …. that is where I find the worth of karaoke as a “tool” for an upcoming performer …. the challenge of making something special out of a static set of parameters!
To me, karaoke also provides another litmus test for all performers …. as to whether you are a dynamic singer or not …. dynamic enough to be able to draw the attention of a pub crowd, for them to stop their chin-wagging, for them to put their beers down, and for them to watch and listen to you sing your song/s right through …. There’s nothing more satisfying at karaoke then to be able to make eye contact with most everyone in the room when one is performing – then you know you have the audience’s attention, then you that you have “IT”!!
