Hi David

Do you have anything against karaoke hosts that sing a song to open the show?? I was reading your e-mail of the 'do's and don'ts' for karaoke hosts, and one thing that you say is that a host should never sing. Now everyone on this forum knows that my hubby Mick is a host and he opens his show with a song, usually one from one of his own discs but something bright and breezy to get the show started. A lot of hosts do this, some don't. Isn't it an individual choice?

You are right in saying that it is not easy to be a host. Mick has been hosting now on and off since 1999 and he has learnt many things during that time. Experience is a good teacher, that and if you work for a company (like Mick does) than encourages their staff all the way, then it is a big plus. I must say that he has a truly warped sense of humour - if you could have seen him acting the fool last night then you would know what I mean, I wish I could get the photo that I took on my mobile phone onto this site for everyone to have a laugh at - but this type of thing keeps a show lively and stops boredom setting in. Mick does go around and work the audience, he will often stop at tables and say hello to new people and also to ones that are regulars. When he opens his show, he doesn't stay on stage, he works the floor and includes the audience in his song.

So I would say that it has to be an individual choice as to whether a host sings or not. If it is a quiet night Mick and whoever he has as a console operator will sometimes sing more than one song, it is more like a 'fill in' between rounds.

Anyway these are my thoughts on the subject, no doubt I will receive my share of comments about it be they good or bad.
