From the Where2sing.com forum:

Today's Boiling Point... Sigh... While I don't know this singer and I can't vouch for the host, several things pop out at me here:

1) Given a mic to downplay your voice? Excluding the possibility that this actually happens, people need to remember several things here. First, the host has heard their own voice through a microphone a hell of a lot more often than they've heard anyone else's so there's a fair chance that they know how to EQ their own voice better than anyone else's. Secondly, a host has at most 5 seconds to get to a point where they've achieved the EQ level they want to achieve for a singer. Often, close enough is good enough (unless there's a glaring key change and the singer needs to be re-EQ'd). Given these points, yes, it's almost a certainty that a host will sound better than the singer. They're not out to get you...

2) If the vocal output is too loud or getting too much bass, it is the host's *job* to alter the mix. More often than not, the host is not going to rely on the singer to regulate their own output because the singer would have done it already. By and large, singers want to sound louder than the audience wants to hear them and it's the host's job to walk the line in between. If you can't tell that you're too loud, how are you going to do anything about it?

3) Ahhh... my personal favourite, maths! Ok, so you got there early and you got plenty of songs because there was only 5 other people singing. Now the room is full and you still want to sing heaps. But darn it, so does everyone else. What most people don't get is that you can only fit (by and large) 15 songs in an hour. If there are 30 people waiting to sing (which isn't that many really if the room is full) then that's a 2hr wait no matter which way you slice it. In a 4hr show, that's 50% of the gig. Most of those people aren't going to get a 2nd song and you're moaning about having to wait for your 5th? Serious?
