Re: Hosts singing.
This is another grey area - there is no real black & white answer here. It depends on the show, the hosts, the number and type of singers, the audience, and the run of the night.
(1) In our shows there are almost always two hosts, and we always sing at least the first song of the night - we do this to check the sound levels, etc. We tried not doing this one particular night and it backfired terribly with the sound being very ordinary for most of the first song, with everyone not being very impressed.
(2) We almost always also close the show as well. One of the main reasons for this is to have 'control' of the stage area and equipment at the end of the night. There have been exceptions where we have had a 'known' singer close the night.
(3) Dependant on the number of singers, we will also sing at the top of each rotation. We normally remove ourselves from the rotation once we get more than about 8 singers.
(4) We have also stepped in to sing in the middle of a rotation. This would normally occur if we have a series of 'not so good' singers in a row. We are very mindful that our audience is made up of not just singers, but in fact the majority of our audiences are there to be entertained, and if there is 3, 4 or 5 'not so good' singers in a row, some of the audience may decide to leave. - We have seen this happen at one of our gigs, and our audience numbers drop off significantly. Thus we try and avoid this from happpening.

All of the above are 'general' guidelines that we go by, but as I stated at the start, it is totally dependant on a number of factors, and we vary these according to our reading of any particular night.
