Peter M... I agree with your comment 'This is another grey area - there is no real black & white answer here. It depends on the show, the hosts, the number and type of singers, the audience, and the run of the night.' However, it seems to me that many hosts sing as some kind of 'right', and not as part of a considered business decision. I still think that to have the host doing the first song can send the wrong message - could this be done by someone not the host but whom you know well, or perhaps the sound levels set some time before the show starts (the host does a test song and announces it as such), invites those already present to put in song requests, and announces that the show will start in x minutes?

I do, however, believe that a run of dreadful singers may call for a reprieve song by the host instead of elevating the turn of a known good singer, and indeed I have seen shows (like Rovics) where the bulk of the audience clamours for the host (Rosalie) to sing - but these are unusual circumstances. But it's good to be aware that by far the majority of singer complaints are about singer rotation and mic-hogging hosts because these strike at the core of what karaoke is supposed to be.
