FB: If someone comes up to me, throws their arm around me and tells me they're a crap singer, they've stepped over a personal space line but you know what, it's really not hard to not be offended by it. Some people would get ansy about it and one person I know gets quite put out by it. They asked me about a job recently and I didn't think it was a good idea. Hosts work in a place that serves alcohol as its primary function and part of a host's job is to deal with people who intoxicated and show it. Do they mean to be offensive? Usually not. Is it such a big deal in the grand scheme of things? Not at all.

I draw the line at abuse towards me or my patrons, damage or threats of damage to my equipment and behaviour that could unintentionally lead to harm (dancing with no control near a speaker for instance). If someone swings a mic, it drives me nuts but I look at it from their point of view as well. They're having fun, they feel like a rockstar (because my show has given then a high) and they're acting out a fantasy. Am I going to have a stern talking to them, you bet but i've made that emotional connection with them and that's my goal. They'll usually apologise and be good natured about it and that's usually the end of it. Repeat offenders get black listed. A thrown mic (and it's only happened once) is an instant smackdown.

My approach, and it's served me pretty well (especially with the backpacker pub I host at) is if you treat them like children, they'll act like children.

BHM: Get out of the big city? What would I have to see to make it a trip worthwhile do you think?
