From the Where2sing.com forum:

karaokechic, your speakers need to be MORE than 500w otherwise if you drive the mixer at full power you will blow your speakers to smitherines!! Also you need to see what the amplifier in your mixer is rated at, ie is it 500w into an 8ohm speaker? As this changes your theoretical power output depending on what impedance speakers you connect. But as most stage speakers are still traditionally 8ohms, this shouldn't pose much of a problem. I am running 15 inch speakers myself but that can all depend on the size of the room involved. Some rooms can be sufficiently served with 12 inch speakers.

MB, re: overload protection, very good point!!

LB, you really do need to get a bit of technical expertise before you go answering those questions. That isn't an assumption, otherwise you'd have got the answer to KC's question right. Also, there was no assumption in my summation of your ignorance in my last post, otherwise you'd have never asked the question referred to.
