BHM: There was a time when I was an absolute nazi about it (apologies to our German friends) but since I've started hosting at a backpacker bar, I've started to really get into the heads of why these people (and people in general) are going out, why they're coming to karaoke, why they're coming to my karaoke.

It's simply not my job to be their mums and I'm sure no one wants me to be their mum. Safety is one thing, I will not tolerate emotional or physical violence or threats of such, but good lord, if someone wants to let loose, as long as they're not hurting anyone, why are we caring so much?

Let me put it this way: I presume everyone is ok with someone playing air guitar on stage during an instrumental break (if not, there really is no assimilating our positions). This person can not actually play guitar in real life most likely, their hands are in the wrong positions, the strumming or picking is in the wrong sequence relative to the music but we don't care because they're enjoying themselves. They're leaving their own identity behind for 4 minutes and they're becoming someone else. It's no longer just about singing a song, it's about living the rockstar life and it's this that is more likely to make people want to come back for more, especially for those people who are new to karaoke. No respect for the rules of karaoke? I'd like to pose these questions: what were those 'rules' designed to achieve, do we still want to achieve those things and if we do, do those rules still achieve them?

So let's start there for the moment, can we all agree that air guitar is fine?
